Food Access for A healthy community

Did you know?

The CFW Market Share is one of two programs in the whole city that offers discounted CSA memberships for residents who rely on SNAP (formally known as Food Stamps) and WIC users. Customers who use SNAP are able to purchase Market Share bags at a 75% discount. We even deliver CSA shares to various childcare centers across the city. We are also the only CSA to offer delivery for seniors for whom getting to the market can be challenging.

Over 400 families have enjoyed fresh, seasonal, local produce thanks to these programs!

Unlike other reduced-priced programs, our SNAP Market Share is exactly the same as retail Market Share: no odd-balls, seconds, or soon-to-expire produce to be found here. In addition to fruit and veggie distribution, the Market Share creates an experience equal in quality, service, and delivery, regardless of the currency used for purchase. Families are able to enjoy items like heirloom tomatoes, fairytale eggplants, and seasonal fruits such raspberries and blackberries that may have seemed too costly to purchase otherwise.

In 2017, Community Foodworks fulfilled $31,986 in discounts to Members of the Market Share who shopped with SNAP and WIC.

bringing the market share to seniors in need

CFW partners with an independent senior care network We Are Family to deliver much needed fresh produce directly to the doorsteps of low-income seniors who have limited mobility and, therefore, limited access to the farmers market and its financial support programs.

In 2018, we are expanding this delivery by partnering with the DC Housing Authority to provide Market Share membership to 2-3 Senior Residences across the city.

In 2017, CFW fulfilled 3,345 shares, generating more than $16,000 for local farmers, and over 25,000 pounds of local produce to local seniors.

Seniors, in particular, have limited access to fresh food.  While pantries and supplemental food programs offer a number of dry food supplemental programs, these programs provide extremely limited access to fresh goods, and even less access to produce. In response, CFW Senior Market Share delivers an appropriately portioned produce for seniors in facing food insecurity in our community.
