Bonus Bucks is Community Foodworks' cornerstone food access and financial support program. Bonus Bucks provides a dollar-for-dollar match for all Federal food benefits spent on fresh, local food at our farmers markets.
WHO BONUS BUCKS SUPPORTS
Bonus Bucks helps increase purchasing power for shoppers who utilize Federal food benefits, including:
- SNAP (food stamps),
- WIC (supplemental nutrition assistance for Women, Infants and Children), and
- Senior FMNP (Farmers Market Nutrition Program.)
Making the farmers market an inclusive public space
Not only does Bonus Bucks help make nutritious food more affordable, it is also a tool to build a equitable, diverse, and supportive public space.
In 2016, CFW distributed more than $45,000 in matching funds to thousands of low-income customers, many of whom are regular weekly shoppers. This equates to over 50,000 servings of fruits and vegetables! The majority of Bonus Bucks was distributed in underserved communities in Wards 1, 5, and 7.
In 2015, over 20% of all WIC FMNP spent in DC was spent at CFW's Columbia Heights Farmers Market, making it by far the highest single redemption site in the city.
